Important Discoveries of CBD Cancer Research

Man has cultivated cannabis since Neolithic times. It was used for fiber and rope production, recreational purposes and as an excellent therapeutic agent.

After multiple decades of research, scientists studying the effects of marijuana as a therapeutic agent and possibly one that could cure illness, made several important discoveries. First, they identified the active ingredients in marijuana, and second, they discovered where and how it works in the brain—though a newly identified system now called the endocannabinoid (EC) system.

The EC system is a unique communications system in the brain and body that affects many important functions, including how a person feels, reacts and moves. Natural chemicals produced by the body that interact within the EC system are called cannabinoids. Interaction of cannabinoids with receptors regulates these important body functions.

Researchers now know that the major cannabinoids found in cannabis, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), will activate the cannabinoid 1 (CB1) and cannabinoid 2 (CB2) receptors of the EC system in ways similar to the natural chemicals.

According to echoconnection.org, an inclusive online community of people who are considering or currently using cannabinoids in the pursuit of bettering their health, “activating these receptors can elicit antitumor effects in a number of aggressive cancers. THC and CBD have been shown to inhibit the progression of cancers located in the breast, lung, prostate, and colon in animal models, suggesting that the cannabinoids may also be effective at mediating cancer cell death in human subjects.”

Clinical Study Results – CBD and Cancer Patients
Evidence from clinical studies suggests that cannabis has the potential of inhibiting the growth of and even killing cancer cells and can help patients manage symptoms associated with cancer treatments. Here are just a few study results:

  • CBD acid has shown in one study to have the capability of down-regulating invasive human breast cancer cells and therefore preventing their growth.
  • In 2016, the same team of researchers found CBD acid to effectively inhibit the migration of breast cancer cells and were able to identify the effect to be associated with the cannabinoid.
  • CBD was shown to be effective at treating the more difficult to control symptoms of nausea, as well as preventing anticipatory nausea in chemotherapy patients.
  • Another study found that THC was effective at reducing conditioned rejection and chemotherapy-induced nausea.
  • In one study, cancer patients with persistent pain who unsuccessfully tried to manage discomfort with opioids saw significant reductions in pain levels after being treated with cannabis containing both THC and CBD for two weeks.
  • THC has shown to significantly stimulate appetite in cancer patients that have weight loss due to nausea and a loss of appetite. Patients reported having a larger appetite and that food tastes better.
  • A survey study analyzing the effects of cannabis in 131 cancer patients after six to eight weeks of treatment found significant improvements in all of the measured cancer-related symptoms, which included nausea, vomiting, mood disorders, fatigue, weight loss, anorexia, constipation, sexual function, sleep disorders, itching, and pain.
  • Patients treated with THC also experience higher quality sleep and relaxation.

Many other scientific studies indicate the potential use of cannabinoids in the fight against cancer. Experiments carried out on cells in a laboratory vessel and on animals have shown that phytocannabinoids, endocannabinoids, synthetic cannabinoids and their equivalents can lead to the inability of cells to grow and metastasize in many types of tumors, mainly due to cell death.

Scientists are working to find a cure for cancer continue to investigate the potential for a CBD derived drug which could cure or reduce the side effects of cancer and its conventional treatments.

At time of publishing, in the USA there are two cannabinoid-based drugs approved for use by US FDA: Nabilone and Dronabinol.

According to the US National Library of Medicine, Nabilone is allowed for the treatment of nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy, and sleep disorders. Dronabinol is approved also for nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy and for the treatment of weight loss associated with AIDS. Another drug approved outside the USA (Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Demark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom) is Nabiximols, which is allowed for a treatment of spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis.
